TPLF is attempting to invade into Amhara Region on the west side from Tekulesh and east of Kobo at three fronts from which sounds of mortars and sniper rifles can be heard.

A second round of civil disobedience has begun in Welkite town, Gurage Zone (Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Region, Ethiopia) including closing all businesses and staying indoors

A second round of civil disobedience is underway in Welkite town, the capital of the Gurage Zone in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR) associated with attaining regionhood or region status.

The day before yesterday the Command Post in the SNNPR issued a statement prohibiting the closing of commercial businesses and transportation services but despite this yesterday, banks, businesses and transportation services all stopped in Welkite town.

Yesterday, government workers, private institutions, and public transportation providers were among those who participated in the protest in Welkite town.

Yesterday, the Communications Office of the SNNPR Command Post in Welkite town issued a statement warning, “Decisive action will be taken against anyone who defies the Command Post’s orders“.

The first civil disobedience campaign in the town took place over two weeks ago. The protest called for August 9, 2022 (Nehase 3, 2014 EC) had seen all businesses stopped by residents.

The civil disobedience which was advertised across media platforms announced it would last two days (including today).

The cause of the campaign was the proposal by the Prosperity Party for the Gurage Zone to be restructured in the form of a cluster region with four neighboring zones and one special woreda. The proposal encountered fierce resistance from Gurage politicians and activists. The Gurage Zone Council over two weeks ago on August 11, 2022 (Nehase 5, 2014 EC) held an emergency assembly in which the majority voted and rejected the idea of the cluster arrangement.
