An abduction attempt was made against detained Amhara Fano leaders and members

Over the past 31 days, Amhara Fano leaders and members have been detained in Bahir Dar Sabitamit prison & today, on Friday, July 29, 2022 (Hamle 22, 2014 EC) Mager Media learned from their attorney that there was an abduction attempt made against them by federal police and individuals wearing regional security uniforms.

In the court hearing which took place today in the Amhara Regional Supreme Court, leaders and members of Bahir Dar and Shewa Fano were granted bail of 25,000 ETB each, but only hours after this verdict, they remained in prison and the incident transpired.

Their lawyer told Mager Media following the bail granted to the detained Amhara Fano members, federal police and individuals wearing regional security uniforms attempted to abduct them from the prison entrance however the attempt was thwarted when they were not released (late afternoon court decision) and because residents of Bahir Dar city flooded the prison entrance.

On Monday, June 27, 2022 (Sene 20, 2014 EC), fourteen Amhara Fano members were arrested by police during a meeting in Bahir Dar city accused of terrorism crimes including violating the constitution and constitutional order and conspiring to assassinate government officials.

On Tuesday, July 26, 2022 (Hamle 19, 2014 EC), the detainees were brought before the Amhara Regional Supreme Court and the period for evidence collection was closed and federal police issued a formal letter calling for the detainees to be transferred into their custody.

It can be recalled that the Amhara Fano members issued a complaint against the national intelligence, peace and security taskforce of disseminating false, defamatory information against them, given that they were arrested (wrongfully) simply for organized a meeting in accordance with their rights as citizens, given that there was no state of emergency to prohibit such gatherings.
